Most of what we find in New Haven County started as water. A hairline crack in the crown or a lifted piece of flashing lets rain into the masonry, and the Connecticut freeze–thaw cycle opens it up a little further every winter until the repair stops being small.
Every visit starts the same way, whatever the job: the chimney systems in the home evaluated before anyone quotes for work. If nothing needs doing we will tell you that — it happens more often than you would think.
New Haven County has the mix that most of suburban Connecticut has: colonials and capes built across several decades, a good number with a masonry chimney that was designed around an open fire and has since had an insert, a stove or a new heating appliance connected to it. That mismatch between flue and appliance is behind a large share of what we are called out for — a flue sized for an open fire is far too large for a modern stove, and an oversized flue never gets hot enough to draw cleanly or stay clean.
The second pattern here is a house that has been made more airtight than the chimney was designed for. New windows, added insulation and sealed-up air leaks all reduce the make-up air a fireplace needs, and a bathroom fan or a range hood can then be enough to pull the draft backwards. When a New Haven County fireplace only smokes sometimes, ABC Chimney Solutions looks at what else in the house is moving air before touching the chimney.

Eight of the several thousand chimneys we have swept, lined and rebuilt across Connecticut.
The inspection found a cracked clay liner two other companies had missed. Relined in stainless the following week and the smoke coming back into the room stopped dead.
Open fire had not been swept in six years. They pulled out a shocking amount of creosote, sheeted the whole hearth, and left the room spotless.
Damp was coming through the chimney breast for two winters. They traced it to a failed crown, recast it and waterproofed the brickwork — bone dry since.
Flashing had lifted and the damper had seized shut. Both repaired in one visit, and they showed me the before and after photos on the roof.

Full stack rebuild above the roofline on a 1920s house. They matched the original brick and mortar so closely the neighbors asked who did our repointing.
Booked the sweep on Monday, done Tuesday. The photographs and written flue report are more thorough than the survey we paid for when we bought the place.
Our wood stove never drew properly. They worked out the flue was oversized for the appliance, fitted an insulated liner, and it lights first time now.
Needed the chimney looked at fast for a house sale. On the roof the next morning, and I had a clear answer and a price the same afternoon.
