Exposure is the thing that catches people out in Colchester. A chimney is the only masonry on the house with weather hitting it from five sides, so it degrades faster than the walls below it and gets looked at far less often.
Because we are in New London County constantly, we know which streets in Colchester have the tall exposed stacks, which have the unlined clay flues, and roughly what a chimney of that age has been through before we arrive.
In this part of Connecticut a wood or pellet stove is frequently the main source of heat rather than something lit at weekends, and that changes the maintenance picture completely. A stove burning daily through a New London County winter puts far more through its venting than a fireplace used a dozen times a year, and it is one of the few situations where ABC Chimney Solutions genuinely recommends checking the system again partway through the season rather than waiting for the next annual visit.
Much of the housing stock here is older and rural, which means chimneys that predate the appliances now connected to them. A stack built for a fireplace and later fitted with a stove insert is usually oversized for the appliance, and an oversized flue never reaches temperature properly — the classic combination of weak draft, a smell in the room and heavier deposits than the owner expects.
Connecticut towns no travel charge
Most people find us after a bad experience somewhere else. Here is what we do differently.
If your chimney is sound, we say so. We quote what the flue needs — not what pads the invoice.
Findings explained in plain language, with photos or video when they help make the condition clear.
ABC Chimney Solutions does the chimney work and coordinates any licensed trade the project needs.
Licensed and insured in Connecticut, with manufacturer warranties on the products we install.

The hearth is left cleaner than we found it, and you are told exactly what was done and what to watch.
Eight of the several thousand chimneys we have swept, lined and rebuilt across Connecticut.
The inspection found a cracked clay liner two other companies had missed. Relined in stainless the following week and the smoke coming back into the room stopped dead.
Open fire had not been swept in six years. They pulled out a shocking amount of creosote, sheeted the whole hearth, and left the room spotless.
Damp was coming through the chimney breast for two winters. They traced it to a failed crown, recast it and waterproofed the brickwork — bone dry since.
Flashing had lifted and the damper had seized shut. Both repaired in one visit, and they showed me the before and after photos on the roof.

Full stack rebuild above the roofline on a 1920s house. They matched the original brick and mortar so closely the neighbors asked who did our repointing.
Booked the sweep on Monday, done Tuesday. The photographs and written flue report are more thorough than the survey we paid for when we bought the place.
Our wood stove never drew properly. They worked out the flue was oversized for the appliance, fitted an insulated liner, and it lights first time now.
Needed the chimney looked at fast for a house sale. On the roof the next morning, and I had a clear answer and a price the same afternoon.
