A fireplace that behaved all winter starts to smell in July. It is one of the most common calls we take in summer, and it is not your imagination — there is a mechanism behind it.
Three things happening at once
Humidity is reacting with the deposits
Creosote and soot are hygroscopic — they absorb moisture from the air. Connecticut summers are humid, and damp creosote releases far more odor than dry creosote. The deposit has not changed; the air around it has.
The flue is running backwards
In winter, warm indoor air rises and the flue draws upward. In summer, with air conditioning running, the indoor air is cooler and denser than the outdoor air. That reverses the stack effect — air flows down the flue and into the room, carrying everything in the chimney with it.
The house is pulling on it
Extraction fans, range hoods and dryers put a sealed modern house into negative pressure. The flue is often the largest opening to the outside, so it becomes the make-up air route. That is the same mechanism that causes downdraught problems in winter, only now it is delivering odor instead of smoke.
What to do, in order
1. Sweep it
Remove the source. Less deposit, less odor, whatever the air is doing. This alone resolves a large share of summer smell complaints and it needs doing annually regardless.
2. Check for water getting in
Rain landing on the smoke shelf and soaking into soot produces a much stronger smell than dry deposits, and the usual reasons are a missing cap or a cracked crown. If the smell is noticeably worse after rain, this is your cause.
3. Fit a cap if there isn't one
Keeps rain out of the flue, and the right design helps break the downdraught pattern that is pushing air into the room.
4. Seal the opening when it is out of season
An inflatable chimney balloon or a fitted top-sealing damper closes the flue when it is not in use. A top-sealing damper — which seals at the top of the stack rather than at the throat — is the better long-term answer, because it also stops the whole flue becoming a route for conditioned air to escape all year.
5. Look at the house pressure
If the smell arrives whenever the dryer or the range hood runs, that is negative pressure and no amount of chimney work will fully solve it. Cracking a nearby window while those run will confirm the diagnosis in about a minute.
When it is not the fireplace at all
A persistent musty smell with no creosote note can be animals — nesting material, or something that got in and did not get out. That has a distinctly different character and needs removal rather than sweeping.
And if you have an unused flue in a shared stack, odor from the working flue can migrate through cracked masonry into it. That is a liner problem presenting as a smell, and it is worth having the flue looked at before you spend money on anything else.
Fixing it properly
Where the smell is being pulled in by reverse draft, that is a draft and smoke diagnosis, and the fix is frequently a top-sealing damper that actually closes. Where the deposit genuinely is the source, it is a chimney cleaning. ABC Chimney Solutions checks which before charging for either.
Frequently asked
Will a chimney balloon fix the smell permanently?
It manages the symptom well and it is inexpensive, but it does not remove the deposits producing the odor. ABC Chimney Solutions would use one alongside a cleaning rather than instead of one — and remember to take it out before the first fire, which is the one failure mode of the things. Why does it smell worse when the air conditioning is on?
Air conditioning is what reverses the flow. Cooled indoor air is denser than the summer air outside, so the pressure difference that pushed air up the flue all winter now pushes it down and the chimney becomes an inlet instead of an outlet. ABC Chimney Solutions treats that as an airflow problem rather than a dirty chimney. Learn more about this service.
Can I just seal the fireplace up permanently?
You can, but do it properly. A flue sealed at the bottom with no ventilation traps moisture inside the stack, and trapped moisture in masonry through Connecticut freeze–thaw cycles causes exactly the damage you were not intending to pay for. If a fireplace is genuinely finished with, ABC Chimney Solutions can decommission it properly rather than leaving it blocked up. Learn more about this service.
